Subject to the historical monuments protection act, the existing residential building comprising of 4 apartments underwent a renovation and extension with the addition of a new apartment in the attic. As a measure to reduce energy loss, the entire building was provided with an external thermal insulation system, the old windows were exchanged and the existing balconies replaced with new, thermally decoupled ones. The original pyramid hip roof was torn down, replaced with a gable roof and raised together with the outer walls by 1 metre in order to ensure the required headroom for the new apartment. Two spacious terraces were then created by carving into the pitch of the roof itself. The entire loft apartment is naturally lit by large windows in the gable ends, ceiling height windows as well as sliding doors that open onto the terraces. Originally designed to comply to category \u201cC\u201d of CasaClima standards, the high level of energy efficiency has augmented the building to CasaClima category \u201cB\u201d owing to an annual heating energy consumption under 50 kilowatt-hours per square metre.<\/p>\n
