Wood as way of being: The forestry station in the centre of Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen is a compact timber building for the local forestry office of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen which exemplifies the responsible use of resources. Its form draws on the archetype of traditional two-storey houses with pitched roofs – reduced to its essentials. The building’s dual function of internal administration and public reference point defines the spatial organisation: service rooms in the basement, public areas on the ground floor, and a meeting room on the upper floor that can also serve as an emergency operations centre. The load-bearing structure, walls, and floors are made of cross-laminated timber panels (X-Lam). The blackened timber façade reinterprets traditional techniques in which elements in contact with the ground were charred to protect them from moisture and decay. As if pressed into the earth, the building anchors itself in the soil, grounding tradition while projecting its contemporary language into the future.

A green bridge: At the southern entrance to Barbian/Barbiano, a green wooden building makes a striking statement. The ensemble, which meets the Gold Climate House standard, combines a kindergarten, daycare centre, children’s canteen and tourist office. Two structures: one for educational rooms with a roof play area, the other a tourist office with a lift tower and staircase – are connected by a bridge that spans the road. On the outside, green-glazed wooden façades make the building visible from afar, while inside, natural illumination, light-coloured materials and the consistent use of wood create a calm, child-friendly atmosphere. Open learning landscapes with niches and meeting islands create places for play, encounters and retreat. A green bridge between education, mobility and community.

Children’s dreams, built sustainably. The kindergarten in Kiens offers space for two separate groups and a daycare centre for up to 20 children. The two-storey wooden building, designed by Roland Baldi Architects, is characterised by light-flooded rooms that open onto the garden. A children’s canteen caters for both the kindergarten children and the pupils of the neighbouring primary school. The reddish-brown wooden façade, inspired by the church tower, blends harmoniously into the townscape. A zigzag ramp provides step-free access and connects the building with the upper half of the village. The result is a dream building for children, where the little ones can explore, learn and play in safety.

Needs-oriented, aesthetically executed

Roland Baldi Architects undertook the conversion of the workshop wing of the Trayah social center in Bruneck/Brunico. The project employed a lightweight timber construction in compliance with standard A of the ‘Casa Clima’ regulations. Featuring a twisted hipped roof, circumferential window frames and a uniformly textured façade, the workshop wing has now been charged with clean lines which imbue the space with liveliness and identity. In combination with an interior design adapted to the needs of the centre’s users, an attractive and modern workplace has been created in which people with disabilities are supported according to their individual needs.

Raise the curtain!

The clubhouse Falzes in Val Pusteria can accommodate up to 280 people, here Roland Baldi Architects staged their interior design concept. The stage was designed entirely in black and is equipped with all technical stage equipment. Like a sound box, the main auditorium has been clad in oak wood with reflectors hanging from the ceiling to ensure optimal acoustics, while the entrance and foyer come alive with a play of curtains that can be opened or closed to welcome spectators with different possible interior scenarios.
