In the right square at the right time!

As part of the redesign of the Mobility Centre in Collalbo, consisting of a bus station, a car park and a commuter garage, Roland Baldi Architects also designed a new, open and spacious station square for residents and visitors. Here tourists can find an information board to help them organise the excursions in the area or alternatively meet up with friends at the busy tables of the station bar. The flooring consists of alternating strips of green and reddish-brown porphyry cubes. This carpet of natural stone covers the entire front area of the beautiful station building and stretches all the way to the platform. The various porphyry strips are partly interrupted by small green areas or seating.

A roundabout and a few car parking spaces have been built in front of the new square. This area works as a kiss and ride zone. It is used to stop briefly, let someone out and leave directly.

The only thing that has been kept in place is the bronze sculpture by the artist Franz Messner: a goat peering through its mirror at some sparrows, also cast in bronze, who have recently begun whistling from the station roof: ” In the right square at the right time!”

Architecture saves us: With the new building of the Civil protection centre Ritten, Roland Baldi Architects designed a “common home” for the command of the fire brigade, white cross and alpine rescue where they can operate smoothly and proactively across all areas of expertise. With its simple and sculptural shape, the new civil protection centre forms a contemporary contrast to the rural and local architectural language typical of the area. The two-storey building, constructed according to the “Klimahaus” A standards, is integrated into the natural terrain slope and communicates with the north-facing entrance area next to the main street and the residential area behind it. Most of the volume, however, was arranged in a compact structure below the parking lot. Thanks to the façade made of dyed stamped concrete in reddish colour inspired by famous Ritten earth pyramids, the Civil protection centre Ritten fits perfectly into the impressive landscape.

Child-friendly and sustainable: with Sluderno Kindergarten, Roland Baldi Architects has created a wooden building with a pitched roof, plastered façade and significant windows of different sizes that, with their staggered layout and dimensions, are reminiscent of an child’s drawings. Inside, all the rooms can be accessed through the spacious foyer, which is also a welcome, recreation and play area. The group rooms face south towards the recreation areas in the garden. The custom-made wooden furniture, such as stools, tables and wardrobes, together with deliberately chosen colours convey a sense of security.

The restoration work involved the entire building with the flagship store extending over five floors. Each floor featuring a different atmosphere, with different functions at times blending, at others dividing to give the customer a unique experience of discovery, shopping and gastronomy. The large staircase connecting the five floors serves to give a sense of unity to the environments and can be interpreted as a single extensive pantry. The interior is inspired by Peter Greenaway’s cult film “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover”. At the level of visual communication, the entire building is conceived and focused on the contrast between kitchens and dining rooms.
