The Pompeiian red Auditorium, part of the original building complex, has the shape of an oval cylinder and is topped with a dome which rests on the pillars of the exterior wall. The aim of the project was to create a new space within these narrow pillars, while preserving and respecting the building’s existing architecture. To this end, it was decided to build a glazed façade in the interior of the room, parallel to the row of pillars. The flooring has been made from polished screed and the sloping ceiling from acoustic plaster in Pompeian red to match the original colourway.

Iconic Award 2016 – Best of Best

With its striking monolithic façade, characterised by clear and modern design and a deliberate selection of stone, glass and aluminum, the fire station was conceived as a continuation of the scree, caused by periodic mudflows from the mountain slope behind the construction area. By partially integrating the scree into the retaining dam, a sense of the optical continuation of its movement downstream is conveyed. Custom made gabions were lined with dolomitic rocks and rubble sourced from on-site excavations for the design of the façades. The use of local stones and the façade’s gabion-walls strengthen the identity between the construction site and the building and blend the fire station’s modern design with its natural surroundings.

The particularity of the building lies in its facade: the uniform envelope with its opalescent and crystalline shine is reminiscent of snow. This association refers to the company, who are one of the world leaders in the production of artificial snowmaking systems. The structure of the façade reveals subdivisions on different levels. The floor-to-ceiling cladding with U-shaped profiled glass guarantees natural lighting in the workshops and warehouses. Natural light inside the rooms is diffused as if being viewed through a snowy white sky. The translucent thermal insulation inside the glazed profiles reinforces the effect described and, at the same time, keeps the interior rooms insulated from the cold. With multi-use work and functional areas arranged vertically, the corresponding levels are partly staggered to define the adjacent open spaces, such as the surface for testing snow cannons or the roof of the access ramp.

Subject to the historical monuments protection act, the existing residential building comprising of 4 apartments underwent a renovation and extension with the addition of a new apartment in the attic. As a measure to reduce energy loss, the entire building was provided with an external thermal insulation system, the old windows were exchanged and the existing balconies replaced with new, thermally decoupled ones. The original pyramid hip roof was torn down, replaced with a gable roof and raised together with the outer walls by 1 metre in order to ensure the required headroom for the new apartment. Two spacious terraces were then created by carving into the pitch of the roof itself. The entire loft apartment is naturally lit by large windows in the gable ends, ceiling height windows as well as sliding doors that open onto the terraces. Originally designed to comply to category “C” of CasaClima standards, the high level of energy efficiency has augmented the building to CasaClima category “B” owing to an annual heating energy consumption under 50 kilowatt-hours per square metre.

The Cultural Centre is composed of two intersecting areas distinguished both by form and material. A transparent space housing the district library and the community centre, is penetrated by a second, massive body containing the multi-purpose hall. The structural glass façade emphasises the public nature of the building, providing permeability and transparency and conveying reciprocal spatial relations between inside and outside. The cultural centre, which can be accessed from the “Angela Nikoletti” public square, includes a multi-purpose hall, rooms for the civic centre and the district library. The multi- purpose hall on the ground floor is directly accessible from the main square and therefore particularly suitable for cultural events that take place at the same time on the square and in the hall.
