On the southern edge of Merano, in the midst of residential buildings, industrial halls and apple orchards, stands a U-shaped multi-family house built by three housing cooperatives. The four storey building is comprised of fifteen apartments with the western aspect facing the garden and the eastern, apple orchards. The independent balconies offer wide open spaces and views to the south and east; the box-shaped balconies complement the larger apartments and face the courtyard. The apartments on the ground floor each have a small private garden which create a close connection between the internal and external spaces. The colour scheme was deliberately selected to be discreet: light brown wooden elements, beige façade, walls and stairwells, anthracite for balconies and window exteriors. The contrast formed by the dark red of the balconies and their internal cladding highlights the architectural language.

Attracting attention, showing identity: for the diverse locations of its road bases, the provincial administration sought a uniform architectural concept with high recognition value, adaptability to the most diverse situations as well as acconciseness and clarity that would meet spatial and functional requirements. The corporate architectural design of the current road bases was created to be easily adapted to different situations on site thanks to a flexible modular design. These modules can be attached to one another in a bar, an angle or a U and clearly enclosed with their grey roof covering an orange-coloured area. While the grey is interrupted by holes, “the cut walls” are orange, allowing the internal structure to emerge through these openings in the outer skin. The consistent architectural language with a high degree of conciseness ensures a spontaneous identification of the buildings as a road maintenance base.

The SynCom business park emerged as the winning project in an international planning competition organised by a private entrepreneur. The basic concept of the building is a flexible and at the same time easily identifiable structure, which allows the integration of several companies. A clear formal definition of the building’s body makes it possible to distinguish the different areas from its exterior. The compact, pillarless baseboard, consisting of the ground floor and first floor, houses the craft and production companies. The different levels are connected by distribution areas, with stairs and sanitary facilities, which at the same time also act as load-bearing cores. The upper floor is accessible to vans thanks to a ramp. The tertiary areas and service flats are located in the three-storey meandering structure above. The winding form provides generous space for the three common courtyards. Each of the three staircases is characterised by a different bright colour, making it surprisingly easy to find your way around the large complex.

Located in the historic centre of Bolzano, the building adapts to the specific conditions of its surroundings. The project involved the renovation and extension of a portion of the urban agglomeration of fragmented buildings in Via Conciapelli, the most striking feature of which was the diversity of the individual buildings, which even included a ruin. The gabled house was emptied, and the façade renovated. The ruin was reinterpreted by the construction of a building with identical dimensions and a modern design language. The building adjoining the courtyard and the central area of the block of houses were raised by two floors; the various structures enclosed from above by a new multiform roof. The intervention gave space to the apartments as well as a new gallery and studio. The deliberately discreet materials underline spatial clarity and pay homage to the commercial character of the former building.
